IMION CONCLUDES 2 DAYS EXECUTIVE COURSE WITH A CALL ON MARITIME STAKEHOLDERS TO INITIATE INTEGRATED ACTIONS TOWARDS IMPROVING MARITIME SECURITY FOR ENHANCED GLOBAL TRADE

The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) established by the Nigerian Navy has concluded a 2-Day IMION Executive Course on Maritime Security and Global Trade organized for Key security organizations and maritime industry stakeholders. The Executive Course was held at the Auditorium of the Institute    from 29-30 April 2025.

In his closing remarks, the Director General of IMION, Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia (rtd) reminded the participants to ensure that the key learning outcomes of the course are practicable. Hence, the participants were expected to ensure they returned to the drawing board towards ensuring the nation’s sea lanes are protected to facilitate maritime trade in Nigeria. According to Admiral Udofia (rtd), this will boost the revenue base of the nation significantly while adding value to a host of coastal communities. He employed them to avoid working in silos as inter-agency collaboration remained the only way towards a more secured maritime space for Nigeria. The Director General thanked the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Admiralty Medal, for his support to the Institute which has made it possible to conduct the course.

During the Course, presentations were delivered by seasoned Senior Naval Officers and key scholars in the maritime sector. The presentations included Introduction to Maritime Security, delivered by Rear Admiral Francis Akpan former Defense Adviser to South Africa and a maritime expert, Impact of Maritime Security Threats on Global Logistics which was delivered by Dr. Madu Obiora, a Logistics and Supply Chain management professional and adjunct professor at Malaysia university of Science and Technology.

The presentations were followed by an educative interactive sessions through which participants shared experiences and asked pertinent questions. There was also a guided tour of Nigerian Navy Ship KADA where participants were exposed to the routine operations of a naval ship.

The IMION Executive Course drew participants from the Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Customs Service as well as various agencies and companies within the maritime sector. The workshop further demonstrates the resolve of IMION towards providing a platform for maritime stakeholder to converge and profer solutions to the sector’s contemporary challenges which remained a major reason for the establishment of the Institute.
