  • September 9, 2024

In September 2024, the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) hosted its inaugural five-day workshop, focusing on maritime security and the Blue Economy. Held at the IMION Auditorium, this milestone event brought together representatives from key agencies, including the Nigerian Navy, NIMASA, Nigeria Customs Service, and other law enforcement and regulatory bodies. The workshop served as a platform for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and strategic discussions on pressing maritime issues.

Key Themes and Objectives

The workshop emphasized:

  1. Maritime Security: Addressing threats like piracy, illegal fishing, and smuggling in the Gulf of Guinea. Participants explored inter-agency strategies to enhance law enforcement capabilities and safeguard Nigeria’s waters.
  2. Blue Economy Development: Discussions revolved around sustainable economic opportunities, including fisheries, renewable energy, and tourism, while protecting marine ecosystems.
  3. Policy and Capacity Building: Enhancing the understanding of maritime challenges and shaping policies to ensure a safer and more sustainable maritime environment.

Notable Sessions

  • Inter-Agency Collaboration: Experts stressed the importance of synergy among stakeholders to combat maritime crimes and improve surveillance.
  • Sustainable Practices: Participants discussed strategies to balance economic growth with environmental conservation, aligning with global maritime sustainability goals.
  • Gender and Community Involvement: Sessions highlighted the role of women in maritime security and the importance of engaging coastal communities in surveillance efforts.

Outcomes

The workshop successfully fostered stronger relationships between agencies, expanded participants’ understanding of maritime governance, and inspired actionable strategies for sustainable development. Rear Admiral T.C. Udofia (Retired), IMION’s Director General, highlighted the event as a significant step toward securing Nigeria’s maritime resources and unlocking the potential of the Blue Economy.

This event set the tone for IMION’s role as a leader in maritime research and policy advocacy. Its collaborative approach aims to address Nigeria’s maritime challenges while driving innovation and sustainability across the sector.
