Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), CFR, is a highly decorated senior naval officer and former Chief of the Naval Staff. Throughout his distinguished career, he held several strategic appointments, including Security Coordinator of the Presidential Relief Committee on North-Eastern Nigeria and the pioneer Defence Attaché to Luanda, Angola. He also served as Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Administration.
As the 23rd Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Gambo significantly strengthened Nigeria’s maritime security architecture and recorded notable success in reducing criminal activities within the nation’s maritime domain.
He retired from active service in June 2023, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and national service. His exemplary career earned him multiple military decorations and the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
